How to get a shapefile out of a Web AppBuilder or Experience Builder app
County and city map apps built with Web AppBuilder, Experience Builder, Instant Apps, or Dashboards sit on top of web maps and services. Reaching the data takes a few hops.
An app is three layers deep
Esri's app builders — Web AppBuilder, Experience Builder, Instant Apps, Dashboards, StoryMaps — don't hold data. An app points at web maps, and the web maps point at map services. The data lives at the bottom of that chain.
What it takes by hand
Every hop is its own lookup, and each kind of app hides it differently:
- Find the app's item id, which isn't always in the address.
- Locate the portal it lives on: ArcGIS Online, or the county's own server under one of several folder names.
- Open the app's configuration to find which web maps it uses.
- Open each web map to find its layers and the services behind them.
- Then do everything in our guide on exporting a REST service, for every layer.
Self-hosted apps, linked items that have gone private, and apps that pull from more than one map each add their own dead ends.
With MapPull
Paste the app's link exactly as it appears in your browser. MapPull follows the chain itself, including apps on a county's own portal, and lists every layer at the bottom of it.
